Back Up Your Bookmarks

Losing bookmarks after a browser crash, accidental deletion, or switching devices is a common frustration. Here are two approaches to protect your bookmarks:

Manual Backup via HTML Export

Export your bookmarks regularly using the steps above and keep the HTML file in a safe location (cloud storage, external drive, etc.). This is a simple, browser-native approach that works across all browsers.

Automatic Backup with Web Highlights

When you import your bookmarks into Web Highlights, they are automatically synced to the cloud. This gives you:

  • Automatic cloud backup — Your bookmarks are stored securely in your Web Highlights account
  • Cross-device access — Open your bookmarks from any device via the web app
  • Survive browser resets — Even if you reinstall your browser or switch devices, your bookmarks are safe
  • Enrich with highlights and notes — Go beyond plain URLs — add highlights, notes, and tags to any bookmark

TIP

Cloud sync is available on Premium and Ultimate plans, and during the free trial. Compare plans →

Common Questions

Can I import bookmarks from any browser?

Yes. All major browsers export bookmarks in the same HTML format, which Web Highlights can import. This includes Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, Opera, Brave, Vivaldi, and DuckDuckGo.

Will my bookmark folders be preserved?

When importing into Web Highlights, your bookmarks are imported as individual entries. You can organize them using Web Highlights' tagging system for flexible grouping.

Can I import bookmarks from Pocket?

Yes! Web Highlights supports importing saves and annotations from Pocket. See Pocket import (.csv), Pocket annotations (.json), or the blog walkthrough.

Is there a limit to how many bookmarks I can import?

There is no hard limit on the number of bookmarks you can import. The import feature works the same across all plans. For details on plan features and storage, check our pricing page.

How do I recover lost bookmarks in Chrome?

If you accidentally deleted bookmarks or lost them after a browser update, you can restore them from a backup HTML file using Chrome's Bookmark Manager import. If you had your bookmarks synced to Web Highlights, simply reinstall the extension and sign in — all your bookmarks will be restored automatically.

Can I merge bookmarks from multiple browsers?

Yes. Export bookmarks from each browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.) as separate HTML files, then import them all into Web Highlights. If you import the same URL twice, it will be added as a separate bookmark entry — you can use tags to organize bookmarks from different sources and clean up any duplicates.

Can I export my Web Highlights bookmarks?

Yes. You can export your highlights, notes, and bookmarks to Markdown, Notion, Capacities, PDF, and HTML formats.
