Southern State Capitals

Wilmington is the largest city. Dover has been the capital since 1777.

Not Miami, and not Jacksonville, the largest city. Tallahassee was picked in 1824 because it lay about halfway between St. Augustine and Pensacola, the two main towns of the time.

Also the largest city. Atlanta became the capital in 1868, replacing Milledgeville.

Baltimore is the largest city. Annapolis is home to the US Naval Academy and briefly served as the national capital in 1783–84.

Virginia Beach is the largest city. The capital moved from Williamsburg to Richmond in 1780.

Huntsville and Birmingham are both larger. Montgomery has been the capital since 1846.

Not Louisville or Lexington. Frankfort, a small city between the two, has been the capital since Kentucky became a state in 1792.
