Northeast State Capitals
The Northeast is the smallest census region with nine states, and a good place to start because the pattern shows up right away. Only Boston and Providence are both capital and largest city. New York is governed from Albany, Pennsylvania from Harrisburg and New Jersey from Trenton. New England adds a run of small capitals: Montpelier, Vermont, has about 8,000 residents, fewer than any other state capital, and Augusta, Maine, has fewer than 20,000.

Hartford
Bridgeport is the largest city. Hartford shared the role of capital with New Haven until 1875.

Augusta
Portland is the largest city and was the first capital. Augusta took over in 1832.
What is the capital of Massachusetts?
Boston
One of the few capitals that is also the largest city in its state, and the largest in New England.
What is the capital of New Hampshire?
Concord
Manchester is the largest city. Concord has been the capital since 1808.
What is the capital of Rhode Island?
Providence
Providence is also the largest city in the state. Until 1900 it shared the role of capital with Newport.

Montpelier
Burlington is the largest city. With about 8,000 residents, Montpelier is the least populous state capital in the country.

Trenton
Newark is the largest city. Trenton is where Washington’s army won a key battle after crossing the Delaware River in 1776.
What is the capital of New York?
Albany
Not New York City. Albany, about 150 miles up the Hudson River, has been the capital since 1797.
What is the capital of Pennsylvania?
Harrisburg
Not Philadelphia or Pittsburgh. The capital moved from Philadelphia to Lancaster in 1799 and on to Harrisburg in 1812.
