Concerns about online privacy and security have skyrocketed in recent years. VPN apps have become essential tools for millions of users worldwide. With countless people downloading VPN services every day, the market has exploded with options ranging from free basic protection to comprehensive security suites with advanced features.

Many developers have jumped into the VPN space, creating powerful applications that offer everything from simple connection switching to advanced encryption protocols, ad blocking, and multi-device support. Of course, established companies and privacy-focused startups have all joined in, each promising the best protection for your data.

I wanted to find out more and did a comprehensive VPN comparison. In this article, I will compare and contrast 22 of the best iOS & Android VPN apps available today.

How this list was made: the scores come from Productivity Apps, a review site run by my company — the same one that makes Web Highlights. It rates each app from its App Store and Google Play listings, its ratings and what recent reviews report. The descriptions below summarize each listing and what its users report — they are not hands-on reviews. The store numbers, prices and scores were read on October 12, 2026. The order goes back to the original comparison, so some apps now score lower than apps listed below them. Two sections are paid placements and labelled as sponsored: PureVPN at #1 and Planet VPN.

List of the Best VPN Apps for Android & iOS:

If you prefer a comparison overview, check out the full comparison table of all VPN apps :

1. PureVPN: VPN Fast & Secure VPN

Sponsored: PureVPN paid for this placement at the top of the list.

PureVPN is a well-established VPN with a broad feature set and a large global server network. It has over 5 million downloads on Android, where it holds 3.7/5 across 42,700+ reviews, and 4.4/5 on iOS across 7,900+ ratings.

What really stands out right now is the aggressive pricing. With 82–85% discounts and 3 extra months included on the two-year plans, PureVPN’s long-term plans deliver premium-style features at a budget-friendly monthly cost. That pricing, paired with WireGuard support, split tunneling, and extras like a password manager, data removal, and eSIM data on the higher plans, is its main selling point.

Key Features:

Large global server network – 6,000+ servers across 65+ countries
WireGuard & OpenVPN support – Fast, modern protocols with reliable fallbacks
Split tunneling – Route selected apps outside the VPN
Multi-device coverage – Protect up to 10 devices on one account
Tracker blocker – Included from the Standard plan up
Higher-plan extras – Password manager from Plus; data removal, dark web monitoring and eSIM data on Max

Pros & Cons

Pros:

Excellent long-term pricing with 82–85% discounts
Large server network for travel and streaming
WireGuard support and strong encryption
Multi-device coverage up to 10 devices
Useful add-ons like password manager and data removal
Generally fast connections on nearby servers
Responsive support in many cases
Strong feature-to-price ratio

Cons:

Renewal pricing can surprise new users
Occasional connection drops reported
Some locations/features require higher tiers
Upsell prompts can feel heavy during onboarding
Billing flow requires careful review
Recent complaints about cancellation and billing

Who is this great for?

PureVPN is perfect for users who want a full-featured VPN at a highly discounted long-term price. If you care about streaming access, global server coverage, and modern protocol support, it delivers strong value without premium-level costs.

It’s especially great for users who want more than just a VPN. The add-ons like tracker blocking, password manager, data removal, and optional eSIM data make it feel closer to a security suite than a basic privacy tool.

Compared to others

PureVPN prices its long-term plans aggressively — from $2.15 a month on the two-year Standard plan — while offering a feature set as broad as premium names like ExpressVPN. Compared to AVG Secure VPN, it feels more feature-rich, and compared to Brave Private Web Browser, VPN, it provides deeper VPN controls rather than browser-first convenience.

5. Planet Free VPN ™ Super Proxy

Sponsored: Planet VPN paid to be included in this list.

Planet VPN is the rare free VPN that asks for nothing before it works — no account, no email, no card anywhere in the flow. With over 50 million downloads and a 4.6-star rating on the Play Store (with 1.98M+ reviews), it's one of the most widely installed apps in this comparison. Recent feedback runs cooler than the lifetime average, as evidenced by its 3.73 rating for the last 100 reviews, while the iOS app holds 4.6 across roughly 37,000 ratings.

What really sets Planet VPN apart is that its free tier isn't metered. Six locations across five countries — the USA, UK, France, the Netherlands and Germany — run with no time limit, no data cap and no speed throttle. You pay for it with ads instead. The company behind it, FREE VPN PLANET S.R.L., is a Romanian business operating under EU law with a published registered address, which is more transparency than most apps at this end of the market offer.

Key Features:

No-registration start – Install, tap once, and you're connected; no account or email
Uncapped free tier – Six locations with no time limit, data cap or speed throttle
Kill switch – Drops your internet the moment the tunnel fails
Multiple protocols – Switch by hand when a network throttles or blocks the default
Premium server network – 1,260+ servers across 60+ countries, with streaming and P2P routes
Per-app routing – Send only selected apps through the tunnel (Premium)
Network-level ad blocking – Filters ads and trackers across apps, not just the browser (Premium)
Shared account – One Premium subscription covers up to ten devices

Pros & Cons

Connects without any account
Free tier has no caps
Genuinely simple one-tap interface
Cheap long-term premium plans
Kill switch on every tier
EU company with published address

Whether you're unblocking a region-locked site, checking a store page from another country, or adding a layer on hotel Wi-Fi, it does the job with less friction than almost anything else in this list.

It's especially great for users setting up a VPN for someone who doesn't want to think about VPNs. There's no onboarding to explain, no plan to choose and no settings you need to understand first — and if the free locations aren't enough, premium is cheap enough to be a reasonable step up rather than a bait-and-switch.

Compared to others

Planet VPN's zero-signup start makes it faster to get running than Windscribe VPN, which asks for a confirmed email before its full 10GB allowance, though Windscribe’s free plan includes tracker blocking and split tunneling in exchange for that monthly cap. Against Proton VPN, Planet VPN is the easier start while Proton holds the stronger privacy record with an audited no-logs policy. When compared to Turbo VPN, Planet VPN is the cleaner and quieter app, with fewer permanent banners and less of the interface given over to selling the upgrade.
