Tricky Capitals

Here is where quiz nights are won and lost. In many countries the largest, richest or most famous city is deliberately not the capital — the seat of government was placed elsewhere for politics, geography or to settle a rivalry. Sydney, Istanbul, Rio and New York all feel like capitals, and none of them are. This final set drills the cases people get wrong most often, with a note on each explaining the trap so the correct answer sticks for good.

How to study this set

For each card, actively recall the wrong answer people usually give, then the right one — naming the trap ("not Sydney… Canberra") builds a stronger memory than the answer alone. Pay attention to the context note: understanding why the capital was moved turns a fact you memorise into a story you remember.
