It was a small change in direction: instead of\n  putting information\n  \u003Cem>into\u003C\u002Fem>\n  my head again and again, I started pulling it\n  \u003Cem>out\u003C\u002Fem>\n  . That's active recall. It's the reason I built a learning feature into my\n  highlighter at all — and in this article I'll show you how to use it on\n  anything you read.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"what-is-active-recall\">\u003Cstrong>What Is Active Recall?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>\n  Active recall means testing yourself on what you want to remember instead of\n  passively reviewing it. You close the book, hide the answer, and try to\n  retrieve the information from memory — before checking whether you got it\n  right.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\n  That's the whole method. No apps required, no color-coded system. A question,\n  an honest attempt to answer it, and a check. Researchers call it\n  \u003Cstrong>retrieval practice\u003C\u002Fstrong>\n  , and the act of retrieving is what makes the memory stronger.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\n  The counterintuitive part? Struggling is the point. When an answer doesn't\n  come easily and you dig for it anyway, your brain treats that information as\n  something worth keeping.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"why-active-recall-works\">\n  \u003Cstrong>Why Active Recall Works (and Re-Reading Doesn't)\u003C\u002Fstrong>\n\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>\n  Re-reading feels good because the text becomes familiar. But familiar is not\n  the same as remembered. You see the highlighted sentence and think \"I know\n  this,\" when what you actually know is that you've\n  \u003Cem>seen\u003C\u002Fem>\n  it.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cblockquote class=\"kg-blockquote-alt\">\n  You don't remember what you read. You remember what you're asked.\n\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\n\u003Cp>\n  The research on this is unusually clear. In a well-known\n  \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002F16507066\u002F\" rel=\"noopener\"\n    >2006 study by Roediger and Karpicke\u003C\u002Fa\n  >\n  , students either re-read a text or tested themselves on it. A week later, the\n  self-testing group remembered significantly more — even though the re-reading\n  group\n  \u003Cem>felt\u003C\u002Fem>\n  more confident. The authors end their abstract with one sentence that has\n  stuck with me ever since:\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cblockquote>\n  Testing is a powerful means of improving learning, not just assessing it. —\n  \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002F16507066\u002F\" rel=\"noopener\">\n    Roediger &amp; Karpicke, Psychological Science (2006)\n  \u003C\u002Fa>\n\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\n\u003Cp>\n  And in a large\n  \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002F26173288\u002F\" rel=\"noopener\"\n    >2013 review, Dunlosky and colleagues\u003C\u002Fa\n  >\n  rated common study techniques: practice testing came out among the most\n  effective, while re-reading and highlighting\n  \u003Cem>on their own\u003C\u002Fem>\n  ranked near the bottom.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\n  That last part is worth being honest about, coming from someone who built a\n  highlighter: highlighting alone doesn't make you remember. It's the capture\n  step — it marks what deserves your attention. What you\n  \u003Cem>do\u003C\u002Fem>\n  with those highlights afterwards decides whether they stick. I wrote more\n  about that side of the equation in my article on\n  \u003Ca\n    href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fweb-highlights.com\u002Fblog\u002Fwhy-learning-retention-matters-online-learning\u002F\"\n    rel=\"noopener\"\n  >\n    learning retention\n  \u003C\u002Fa>\n  .\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"active-recall-vs-passive-review\">\n  \u003Cstrong>Active Recall vs. Passive Review\u003C\u002Fstrong>\n\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>Here's the difference in practice:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cul>\n  \u003Cli>\n    \u003Cstrong>Passive review:\u003C\u002Fstrong>\n    re-reading notes, re-watching lectures, scanning your highlights, listening\n    to a summary again.\n  \u003C\u002Fli>\n  \u003Cli>\n    \u003Cstrong>Active recall:\u003C\u002Fstrong>\n    answering a question from memory, explaining a concept out loud, writing\n    down everything you remember on a blank page.\n  \u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\u003Cp>\n  A simple test: if you could do your \"studying\" while half-watching Netflix,\n  it's passive. Active recall is uncomfortable in a way passive review never is\n  — and that discomfort is a good sign, not a problem.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"how-to-practice-active-recall\">\n  \u003Cstrong>How to Practice Active Recall on Anything You Read\u003C\u002Fstrong>\n\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>You don't need a system overhaul. Here's the loop I use:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Col>\n  \u003Cli>\n    \u003Cstrong>Highlight with intent.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\n    While reading an article, PDF, or even a YouTube transcript, mark only what\n    you'd genuinely want to remember in a month. A handful of good highlights\n    beats a page full of yellow.\n  \u003C\u002Fli>\n  \u003Cli>\n    \u003Cstrong>Turn highlights into questions.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\n    Most highlights are really the answer half of a flashcard. \"Spacing effect:\n    reviews spread over time beat cramming\" becomes\n    \u003Cem>\"Why do spaced reviews beat cramming?\"\u003C\u002Fem>\n    Phrasing the question is itself a round of recall.\n  \u003C\u002Fli>\n  \u003Cli>\n    \u003Cstrong>Answer before you peek.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\n    Later — ideally the next day — go through your questions and answer each one\n    from memory. Out loud or on paper works better than \"in your head,\" because\n    you can't fool yourself.\n  \u003C\u002Fli>\n  \u003Cli>\n    \u003Cstrong>Check, grade honestly, repeat.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\n    Got it right? Wait longer before the next review. Got it wrong? See it again\n    soon. Wrong answers aren't failures — they show you what to review next.\n  \u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Fol>\n\u003Cp>\n  The blank-page method is a great low-tech variant: after finishing a chapter,\n  close it and write everything you remember on an empty page. Then compare\n  against the source. What you missed is exactly what needs another pass.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"active-recall-example-youtube\">\n  \u003Cstrong>An Example: Active Recall on a YouTube Video\u003C\u002Fstrong>\n\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>\n  Here is how the loop can work on a YouTube video. Then turn the most important\n  highlights into flashcards. The highlight is already the answer, so all you\n  write is the question on the front.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\n  And that's it.
